The elegant steamship SS Rotterdam was one of the great Holland America Cruise ships in the late fifties and became quickly famous as the ship that could bring you across the Atlantic to the ‘new world’, America (destination New York!). Nicknamed “Behold La Grande Dame,” this iconic cruise ship (now retired from passenger service and resting in Rotterdam’s port) was once the flagship of Holland America Line. It was built in 1959 in Rotterdam, and on its maiden transatlantic voyage to New York carried the Crown Princess of the Netherlands to Manhattan. Read the full blog!

How fitting that 19 years later, that same gentleman, Klaas Krijnen, would be taking us throughout the ship, beginning with a visit to the Smoking Room. Klaas’ grassroots efforts to save the ROTTERDAM were conceived before she concluded her Holland America Line career in 1997 and kicked into full gear when the SS Rotterdam Foundation was formed in 2001 to help raise awareness of her historic and architectural merit. I made my first visit to the SS ROTTERDAM in San Diego on April 2, 1975 and paid her countless visits over the decades that followed. My first cruise in her was in December of 1991 and I would make four more, including her final Holland America Line voyage in 1997. One last sailing in the ship as Premier Cruises REMBRANDT and a sad pilgrimage to see her looking very forlorn in layup at Freeport along with her doomed Premier Cruises fleetmates would follow. In the midst of the modern and the maritime stands a hotel that provokes nostalgia: the ss Rotterdam. Blessed by Queen Juliana of The Netherlands in 1958, the former Holland America cruise liner first set sail in 1958. Fast forward to December 2014: We stayed one night at the SS Rotterdam to experience the ship turned hotel. As you step onto the ship you’re transported to the golden years of cruising with its art deco furniture, nautical uniforms of the front desk staff, and the golden accents in the lobby.
